Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very different from the needles used for injections, blood draws, or tattoos.

Acupuncture Needles Are:

  • Sterile, single-use, and disposable
  • Extremely thin (about the width of a human hair)
  • Solid, meaning they do not inject or remove fluids.

Most people feel little to no pain during insertion. The most sensitive areas tend to be the hands and feet, but even there, sensations are usually mild.

You may experience feelings such as warmth, heaviness, or a dull ache—these are normal and often indicate that the treatment is working.

If you feel nervous, guided breathing can help ease the experience. Alternative, non-needle techniques are also available to accommodate different comfort levels.
