When you think of acupuncture, you think of needles, right? Well, the needles you are picturing in your head, the ones you’re familiar with for shots, taking blood, or getting a piercing or tattoo, are not the same needles used in acupuncture.
So, what are acupuncture needles? They are…
- sterile, single-use, disposable, and solid
- they do not withdraw or inject any fluids in or out of the body
- and they are extremely thin
The most sensitive areas of the body to needle are the hands and feet, but in general, most people don’t feel any pain. I offer to guide my patient’s breathing while I needle to calm the nerves (both literally and figuratively). I also offer alternative techniques that do not involve needling, so I can work with a variety of comfort levels.
When acupuncture needles are inserted, you may feel a warming sensation, dull achiness, or a heaviness, all of which are completely normal during treatment!
