On a physiological level, acupuncture needles are inserted into the skin and stimulate the tissues. Signals are sent to the brain to relax the tissues, increase blood flow to reduce inflammation and swelling, and to release certain hormones such as endorphins that help with the pain.
From an energetic perspective, we all have energy within us; it animates us and is why we are alive. In Eastern Medicine, this energy is called “Qi” (pronounced Chee), and when Qi is flowing properly/going to the right places, we feel balanced and in good health physically, mentally, and spiritually.
However, if there is not enough Qi, if it is blocked, stagnant, or flowing in the wrong direction, it can cause feelings of disease. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the balance of an individual’s body, mind, and spirit to provide relief from a variety of ailments.
