The short answer? It depends.
Acupuncture is an individualistic and effective holistic medicine. Depending on the severity, nature, and type of issue you are dealing with, the amount of treatment you need will vary. If you’ve been experiencing back pain for 20 years, it is not realistic to think that one or two treatments will eradicate the pain! Your back pain didn’t occur overnight! Patience is key. Each person is different and improvement times vary. Consistency is another important aspect of treatment effectiveness, especially at the beginning of your healing journey. Treatments should be conducted close together on a consistent basis to produce the maximum benefit.
It’s also important to remember that certain issues are deeply complex and require patient accountability outside the treatment room. Weight loss, addiction, and insomnia are a few examples of conditions that require action from you, the patient; and lifestyle, dietary, meditative/breathing, and movement practices suggested by your acupuncturist are given to support you and increase the benefits you receive from acupuncture. Simply put, I can use as many acupuncture needles as I have and if you are not willing to listen and implement suggestions outside the treatment room, you may not see the benefits you want!
